I am still amazed at the way this little rescue, in Illinois, and her affiliates, came in, and did what they said they set out to do.

First off ,to insure the safety and well being of these Bird Dogs in need , then the rehabilitaion and healing began.

Not knowing if these dogs might carry some kind of weird parasite, or have behavioral issues that couldn't be reversed,. who knew for sure, that this would have a happy ending?
Stories such as this happen all the time in Rescue,....but how many do you know of , that turn out like the "Boat Mountain" ,aka "Hobbit" story?

On March 9th when Erin brought the first load of Boat Mountain Hobbits to town- she left Louie and Serafina the Granny Hobbit in St. Louis in foster care. I just brought Sera home this am.

She is Hobbity Hobbiting already! Kati said Sera was in the worst shape when she first got her and when she brought her to the vet’s office- most of the staff cried when they saw the condition she was in; thick yeast encrusted ears and dental disease, cysts between her toes and inflamed skin.

She looks great after several weeks of TLC and she is settling nicely at Camp Luckypets just fine!!

We adopted Miss Agnes last weekend! She is doing great! The kids just adore her and she gets along great with Sundance, our other dog!

It is going to take a while for her to get trained on the invisible fence.

She has made herself right at home!! If she isn't playing she is curled up on the couch, her new bed or she takes turns sleeping with the kids!

Just thought we would let you now she is great!

More bad news- Doreen most likely has mammary cancer.
I examined her breasts today and sadly found several suspicious lumps. My last Granny Pointer foster had that and a few surgeries. Doreen is going to the vet tomorrow and we'll go from there.
It is a messy surgery and she will have lots of drains- but I have been through it and will be happy to be her nurse maid.
Besides that surgery she will also have a lump removed on her back leg and a dental. She is a dear and deserves the best Golden years.
If she is 10 and we can give her 6 more years then it will all be worth it.

We heard that there were some VERY nice folks up in Illinois,...
all of our "Pack" is gone ,except the 3 that are still on the mountain ,and we are the only one's still needing a place to go,...
We will be heading north this weekend and we don't want to have to go into boarding,....it doesn't sound like very much fun at all,.. can we maybe stay at you house??? Please?
We are very quiet, we like our crates ALOT,...we saw the photos of our Setter friends,.. we want to eat cheese too!!

These past two weeks have helped to restore my faith in humanity,...the dedication,and determination, of Illinois Bird Dog Rescue goes unmatched, Along with all of the fine folks that pitched in along the way, to Brenda, in Arkansas, that sent out the call for help,and to the rescuers that helped to catch all of these scared puppers, and especially to Erin, that gave up her spring break to drive the 2800 miles to help save these dogs! This was an amazing effort by all involved.
I cannot thank everyone enough who donated money for gas, dogfood, and HW tests, and those people who have opened their homes to these dogs.
It would not have been possible otherwise.
And if everyone could have seen how these dogs were, how much better (and cleaner) they are already getting, and can envision the lives they will have... it is absolutely amazing.

I will always remember the spirit of these dogs.

I left Tuesday morning, and just got back to Michigan a few hours ago.
I picked up:
6 Pointers
2 GSPs
6 English Setters
5 Pointer-Setter mix pups
and 1 Walker Coonhound - who was not in the BoatMountain tragedy, but was a different tragedy altogether.

Her neighbor witnessed her being beaten repeatedly by her owner before she turned her in.
Understandably, she is more leary of people than theBoat Mountain dogs now that they are warming up.
Idid not intend to take her, but she was staying at the person's house who housed me in Arkansas.
I tried to let her sleep with me, but she was just too worried to even lay down.
The morning I was leaving she did a little dance for me and jumped on the kennel to say hi... it was the first time she'd shown that much enthusiasm about me instead of fear.
I told her, fine you can come, there's a spot for you.

Two weeks ago today,. the cry for help was heard coming from Boat Mountain, Arkansas, that as many as 6o Bird dogs were discovered, in deplorable conditions,....and to add to their misery, they were shuffled off to a strange place, divided among different foster homes, some landed in a shelter, with only concrete surrounding them, a few were left behind,... and still remain on Boat Mountain!
